Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

What is FES?

This is a treatment that uses the application of small electrical charges to improve mobility. It is increasingly used for patients suffering multiple sclerosis as a treatment for dropped foot, as well as other neurological conditions.

Who FES can help?

Prime Physio would always encourage an initial consultation to discuss the right bespoke treatment path. However, they have had many successes - using FES - with patients who have the following conditions:

  • Stroke
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spastic paraparesis
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Head injury
  • Conditions effecting the spinal cord or brain
Electrical stimulation allows renewed movements in weakened muscles; the team at Prime Physio compliment this with physiotherapy which builds up strength and range of movement.

Are there any risks or side effects?

Patients can experience a tingling or 'pins and needles' type sensation to the skin, although short periods of stimulation at a low intensity can overcome this.
